JOB DESCRIPTION
Provides academic tutoring services to a wide variety of individuals and groups. Creates and implements tutorial programs that guide and assist students with homework, problem solving, report writing, and test preparation.
We are currently looking for qualified tutors for the following subjects: IT, Science, Nursing.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Helps students with subject content according to individual strengths.
- Helps students develop their own best practices for becoming self-sufficient learners.
- Helps students with study strategies and techniques.
- Tutors students individually or in scheduled group study sessions to review principles, solve problems, and review for tests.
- Helps students set academic goals related to course content, and monitor progress toward those goals.
- Assists with outreach, as needed.
- Research and select learning materials, textbooks, software, and equipment to facilitate tutoring; may design specific handouts, study, and related materials.
- Refers students to other College resources as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Education/Training and Experience Required/Preferred
- At least one year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
- A degree from an accredited institution above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
B. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- Knowledge of effective general learning techniques for college-level coursework.
- Excellent interpersonal skills relating to student support and motivation as well as departmental collaboration.
- Abilities to select materials and methods on a flexible basis in response to student needs; develop or access appropriate supplemental materials.
- Ability to effectively manage time and schedules.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
- Knowledge of tutorial/learning materials and instructional aids.
- Knowledge of peer counseling/tutoring processes and methods.
- Skill in preparing instructional aids and plans.
C. Physical Activity Level
- Light - Sit, walk and stand sometimes, lift up to 25 lbs.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a part-time, non-continuing staff position, assigned to pay grade 6, with a minimum starting rate of $18.50/hour.
The work schedule for this position includes a minimum of 5 hours per week to start, with the potential for additional hours up to 20 per week, as needed, Monday – Friday, in the Learning Center. The hours to be worked per day will vary and are flexible, with the typical schedule being built between the hours of 9am-5pm.
