Lakeland Community College's Teaching & Learning Center (TLC) is a 5 Star Step Up to Quality Award Center providing children, ages 16 months through Pre-K, with a developmentally appropriate education using a curriculum that is based on discovery guided exploration and play. The TLC offers young children the opportunity to establish an excitement for learning through teacher guidance, social interactions, positive relationships, and meaningful school activities. The TLC is open Monday through Friday, 7:15 a.m. until 6 p.m. all year. Children can be enrolled in either a toddler or preschool program. 

All TLC teachers are experienced educators with degrees in early childhood education and have Ohio teaching licenses. The faculty includes physically controlled access, and the campus enjoys the protection of a dedicated law-enforcement team, among other security features. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist lead teacher in planning, researching, implementing and evaluating developmentally appropriate educational experiences in the early childhood laboratory schools serving as model environments for the students in the associate degree program.
  • Supervise activities to ensure the safety of the children, other staff members and students.
  • Ensure that the environment is neat, sanitary, attractive and conducive to learning.
  • Observe and note developmental benchmarks of children through photographs and written observations. Relate significant daily occurrences to caregivers either verbally or in writing.
  • Assist with planning, preparing, serving and disposing of snacks and meals; supervise children when assisting with these tasks. Eat meals with children to demonstrate good nutritional habits.
  • Model appropriate behaviors for working with children and provide feedback for college students.
  • Provide professional input for improving the operations of the Center, report possible violations of state laws or other regulatory agencies to lead teacher for follow up.
  •  Participate in relevant professional organizations and community activities. Assume some lead teacher activities in his/her absence.
  • Substitute as needed in either laboratory school classroom.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience Training Required

  • Associate’s degree in early childhood education.
  • An Ohio Pre-K Associate License prior to being hired. Licensure must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Two years’ work experience teaching children in an educational childcare setting.
  • Certification in first aid and communicable diseases, training in child abuse recognition and prevention, and infant-child CPR must be maintained throughout employment.

Preferred

  • Additional coursework towards completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of early childhood education.
  • Skills in working effectively with parents and children.
  • Ability to learn and properly apply the following: departmental policies and procedures; state and federal laws relative to child-care facilities; ability to model teaching methods and behaviors; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to participate in training for state and national program compliance.

Physical Activity Level:

  • Medium - Significant walking, standing, squatting and kneeling; lift 50 lbs. occasionally, 25 lbs. frequently; able to carry children, furniture and equipment and use child-sized tables and chairs.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT 

  • This is a 12-month, part-time, non-exempt position. The hourly rate is in grade 5A of the Staff Salary Schedule. The anticipated hiring range is $15.73/hour – $19.66/hour
  • Non-insurance benefits include paid time away (vacation, personal, sick, and holiday pay) and prorated tuition.  
  • The work schedule of up to 28.75 hours per week is as follows: Monday – Friday, 12:15 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. with some schedule flexibility.
  • Please note: The final offer for the successful candidate is targeted to fall within the minimum to the mid-point of the salary range but will be based upon an assessment of internal equity, the unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications in relation to the minimum and/or preferred job requirement(s).
