Part-time Staff: Biology Science Lab Assistant

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare materials, chemicals, biological media, maintain stock culture of microorganisms and equipment in a timely fashion and manner that accommodates student use in laboratory exercises according to the class syllabus and faculty directions.
  • Organize, clean, and maintain order of laboratory models, supplies, and equipment.  Dispose of materials properly, wash glassware,and organize and label storage units.
  • Inventory available chemicals, media, models, supplies, and equipment; submit requests for reordering as needed.  Order, organize and file handouts for various chemistry courses.
  • Maintain records of laboratory set-ups, room usage, and ordered/received materials.
  • Assist in training student laboratory assistants in proper laboratory procedures and the use of equipment.
  • Take appropriate action to ensure the safety and security of laboratories, models, chemicals, supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist in minor equipment troubleshooting and repair to ensure proper equipment operation.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Education/Training and Experience Required/Preferred

  • High school diploma with some college-level courses in biology or chemical science and one year of experience preparing and disposing of chemicals and setting up instruments for laboratory experiments.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills ,and abilities is acceptable.

B. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic science laboratory equipment, supplies, and procedures; proper safety and operating practices for the equipment and materials used; chemical nomenclature.
  • Skills in using a variety of lab equipment including but not limited to; microscopes, sterilization apparatus, calculator, balance, vacuum pump, distillation apparatus, melt-temp, infrared instrument, pipette washer, spectroscope, spectrophotometer, pH meter, ultraviolet light, hot plate/stirrer, centrifuge, etc.; troubleshooting and repair, and ability to work with sterile technique.
  • Abilities to learn and properly apply departmental procedures and safety regulations; locate and analyze laboratory problems; properly handle and inventory media, chemicals and supplies, set up laboratory equipment; clean and care for equipment and work area; work independently; following verbal and written directions; perform routine and detailed tasks in an accurate and efficient manner; meet established deadlines; maintain effective interpersonal working relationships.

C. Physical Activity Level

  • Medium to Heavy  - Significant walking and standing, occasionally standing a majority of the work day; lift or move objects frequently, including five-gallon water carboys, water baths, bottles, models, equipment, supplies, and heavy boxes.
  • Lift and move 50-pound bags of sand or soil to the greenhouse.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This is a year-round, part-time, continuing staff position. The hourly salary is at grade 5A of the staff salary schedule.
  • This position requires working in a science laboratory environment with potentially hazardous chemical and biological material,s including biohazardous materials and bloodborne pathogens.
  • Must be able to stand often, carry and lift 25 lbs. frequently, 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • As recommended by CDC and OSHA, health care workers who are susceptible to HBV infection and who have the potential of coming into contact with blood or infectious body fluids during the course of normal work duties should receive vaccination against Hepatitis B.
