Full-time Staff: Assistant Director of New Student Experience & First-Year Advisor

This position is responsible for planning and coordinating the implementation of all new student orientation programs. Contributes to the development of program goals and content, manages program logistics, and provides leadership and direction to create a strong orientation and welcoming environment for new students. Provides academic advising support and serves as a resource for new students.

RESPONSIBILITIES (Non-inclusive):

  • Design and implement a comprehensive new student orientation (NSO) program. Work with employees across the institution to develop and continually modify NSO content.

  • Oversee all logistics for NSO sessions; reserving space, equipment, and refreshments; scheduling advisors, support staff, and student leaders; ordering supplies and supplemental materials.

  • Coordinate correspondence to all new students, outlining necessary steps for students to complete orientation requirements and the first semester messaging campaign.

  • Monitor and update Lakeland 101 Blackboard course, NSO web pages, and other forms of marketing orientation programs to the student body.

  • Will support institutional retention initiatives and may teach First Year Experience.

  • Advises incoming new students with academic program planning, general course selection, career options, and extracurricular opportunities.

  • Provide leadership, problem solve and serve as a resource during onboarding process.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Training and Experience Required/Preferred

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in higher education, counseling or related field
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in higher education, counseling or related field
  • Experience: Experience working in a role with responsibility for designing and implementing written and oral presentations for the purpose of orienting, informing, and engaging an audience or customers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of student development theory and its application to orientation.

  • Experience in academic advising, retention support, and/or mentoring, strong interpersonal skills, and knowledge of retention services and student development.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage audiences during presentations.

  • Ability to evaluate programming needs, appreciate differences among populations, and establish and maintain effective interpersonal working relationships.

  • Ability to successfully manage multiple priorities and tasks; make decisions and solve problems.

  • Excellent computer skills/experience using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.

  • Ability to work occasional evening and/or weekend hours.

Light - mostly sit, stand, and walk occasionally.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a full-time, continuing-status staff position. The work schedule includes 40 hours per week and requires working flexible hours including evenings and weekends. The college’s business hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., M-F.
