FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES (representative)

INSTRUCTION:

  • Teach a variety of courses in the dental hygiene program (including but not limited to) in a manner consistent with institutional course goals and objectives.
  • Select texts, supplemental documents and other learning resources.
  • Set attainable instructional goals and objectives compatible with approved rationale for courses.
  • Evaluate students to determine progress toward course goals and objectives, assign final grades.
  • Maintain a minimum of ten (10) weekly posted office hours over a minimum of three days.

COURSE AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

  • Recommend to the division dean the revision, deletion or addition of courses or curricula.
  • Evaluate and recommend catalog and support material revisions.
  • Maintain updated course outlines according to prescribed college procedures; develop course syllabi.

SERVICE TO THE COLLEGE, PROFESSION AND COMMUNITY

  • Remain current with the field(s) of assigned instruction and related occupational areas by participating in dental hygiene sponsored national conferences and workshops.
  • Acquire, maintain and apply knowledge of current instructional methodologies and materials.
  • Participate in accreditation processes and college, division and department committees and meetings.
  • Serves as the dental hygiene program’s academic administrator.
  • Responsible for communication, program assessment and planning, fiscal management and faculty evaluation.

In addition to performing the duties of a teaching faculty member, the Dental Hygiene Program Director is assigned the following responsibilities:

  • In conjunction with the faculty and Dean, coordinates, evaluates and participates in criteria and procedures for admission, promotion and retention of students.
  • Develops and implements a plan for the evaluation, revision, and improvement of the educational effectiveness of the curriculum based on 1) student learning outcomes; 2) input from faculty, administrators, students and advisory committees; and 3) changes in pertinent national and state-wide legislation, standards for quality care.
  • Serves on full-time faculty search committees and oversees selection and evaluation of part-time faculty, including training lead instructors to interview, orient and evaluate processes for part-time faculty.  Provides input to the Dean with respect to the performance of full-time faculty; orients or oversees orientation of new faculty.  Promotes professional development of all faculty.
  • Oversees the development of faculty teaching schedules and clinical assignments/rotations.
  • Is available on a consultative basis to faculty members with regard to planning, evaluating, or revising courses and clinical experiences and discussing student-teacher and student-faculty issues.
  • Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with various departments offering courses required for the dental hygiene degree and the various community agencies utilized for clinical experiences.  Reviews agency agreements annually and updates them as needed.
  • Meets with prospective students as needed, referring students to college counselors when necessary.  Develops, plans, and assists with orientation and registration of new and returning students.
  • Oversees clinical placement process for student on-site clinic rotations, ensuring adherence to relevant faculty and teaching assistant to student ratios and timely distribution of student assignments in the clinical area.
  • Reviews and tracks student records to determine eligibility for continuing in the program and for graduation.  In collaboration with program faculty and counselors, advises students when performance and/or progress is unsatisfactory and assists in developing plans for improvement.  Reviews petitions for readmission to the program with all full-time faculty and advises students in writing of the results of their petitions.
  • Coordinates the assembly of information and application forms for licensure application and meets with prospective graduates to review necessary procedures for licensing, employment opportunities, etc.  Certifies each student applicant’s degree completion.
  • Determines needs and recommends purchases of instructional materials, equipment and supplies.  Provides input into the budget preparation and fiscal administration of the budget.
  • Ensures end of program, graduate, and employer follow-up surveys are conducted.  Reviews returned questionnaires and uses information to address evaluation of curriculum.
  • Represents the dental hygiene program to various relevant professional organizations.
  • Monitors delegated responsibility for maintaining student and department files including meeting minutes, course syllabi, etc.
  • Assembles data and prepares a wide variety of reports and documents for regional, state, and national accrediting agencies.
  • Provides oversight of dental hygiene program including classroom, clinical and lab components
  • Coordinates and recommends program or department in-service and faculty development
  • Assessing, planning and operating program facilities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. A current dental hygiene State of Ohio license.
  2. A graduate of a program accredited by the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA).
  3. A master’s or higher degree or a DDS/DMD degree.
  4. Minimum of 3 years of professional experience as or working with (e.g., in the case of a dentist) a dental hygienist in a clinical practice.
  5. Previous experience as a didactic and clinical instructor in a dental hygiene program.
  6. Experience that provides evidence of developed leadership, management, and organizational skills in dental hygiene and education. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Prefer applicants with community college teaching experience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:  This is a full-time faculty position with a minimum 178-day employment contract.  

The College-designated, renewable program director assignment has an associated reduction in teaching load ranging from 3-7.5 units of release time. Presently, this assignment is awarded 7.5 units of release time from classroom teaching in both Fall and Spring semesters. Additionally, the assignment includes additional weeks of extended time (defined as work during breaks in the academic calendar – i.e., summer, spring break) to be determined by administration as necessary.
