DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY, INNOVATION & ACCESSABILITY

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: 

The Director of Instructional Technology, Innovation & Accessibility is a leadership role overseeing the planning and delivery of distance learning, emphasizing online and blended programs. Collaborating with academic leaders and technology vendors, this position ensures high-quality online education. Additionally, it manages the learning management system (LMS) and provides comprehensive oversight of classroom audio-visual technology. Operating under the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Director holds significant discretionary authority, responsible for strategic planning, policy development, budget decisions, and supervision of staff, including Instructional Technologists and AV support personnel.

RESPONSIBILITIES (representative, not all inclusive):

  1. Quality Assurance and Collaboration:
    1. Collaborate with academic leadership to establish, implement, maintain, and evaluate quality assurance measures for technology-mediated learning.
  2. Faculty Support:
    1. Oversee and support faculty in the creation and deployment of high-quality distance learning courses.
  3. Classroom Technology Oversight:
    1. Manage and oversee the use of classroom technology, including supervising those supporting the technologies.
  4. Grant Opportunities and Collaboration:
    1. Collaborate with the Foundation Office to identify grant opportunities supporting the growth of distance learning and online learner support.
  5. Accreditation and Compliance:
    1. Provide supervision to ensure compliance with distance learning accreditation standards and industry regulations, including state authorization and Higher Learning Commission requirements.
  6. Research and Innovation:
    1. Stay current on contemporary issues related to course development, quality assurance of technology-mediated learning, copyright/intellectual property, and the use of AI.
  7. Best Practices and Professional Development:
    1. Research and remain current on best practices for technology use in on-campus courses.
    2. Collaborate with the Associate Provost for Faculty Engagement and Dean of Faculty to design, develop, and deliver professional development promoting excellence in distance and technology-enhanced teaching and learning.
  8. Metrics and Tools Implementation:
    1. Implement metrics and tools tracking both operational and educational success, including student enrollment, course numbers, and success rates.
  9. Technology Infrastructure and Consultation:
    1. Collaborate and provide consultation to the Administrative Technology team to ensure appropriate technology infrastructure for online education and classroom delivery.
    2. Serve as the central resource for instruction to communicate its technology-related needs to Administrative Technology.
  10. Student Support Services Liaison:
    1. Serve as a liaison with student support services on issues related to meeting the needs of distance learners.
  11. Executive-Level Support and Committee Engagement:
    1. Provide executive-level staff support as requested.
    2. Serve on assigned internal and external committees and task forces, including the Joint Distance Learning Committee.
  12. General Duties:
    1. Perform duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS (Required and Preferred):

Education/Training and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in educational technology, instructional design, computer sciences with emphasis in educational technology, or a related field and administrative experience in the design, development, and implementation of instructional materials and in the utilization of technology, including distance learning, in a higher educational setting required. Demonstrated experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS) – i.e. Blackboard Ultra, Desire 2 Learn (D2L), Canvas or similar programs.
  • Master’s Degree preferred.

  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in distance learning and classroom technology
  • Skills in effective planning; ability managing multiple projects simultaneously; educating others in the areas of distance and technology enhanced teaching and learning. Abilities to work effectively with individuals with differing backgrounds and knowledge bases; establish and maintain rapport and cooperative work relationships as a leader and a team member; utilize and apply resources effectively; demonstrate high level of creativity.
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating strategic alliances and partnerships internally and externally
  • Demonstrated track-record of providing on-time/on-demand customer support services
  • Ability to gain creditability and facilitate agreement in a consensus based environment
  • Effective consultative, presentation, collaboration, and negotiation skills
  • Strong time management skills and ability to work effectively under the stress of timelines
  • Ability to facilitate top-level collaboration while managing sensitive issues
  • Ability to collaborate, negotiate and resolve conflicts on major projects
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with key contacts to enhance workflow and quality
  • Possesses excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills 
  • Ability to work across organizational lines and effectively with multiple constituencies including faculty, program managers, and deans 
  • Possess sensitivity to respond appropriately to the needs of a diverse population
