General Description: Lakeland's police officers have the primary responsibility of patrolling the grounds and buildings of the college campus to protect lives and property, discover or prevent crimes, enforce laws, investigate crimes, write reports, make arrests, and testify in court.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Patrol grounds and buildings by car and/or on foot for the purpose of protecting lives and property by discovering or preventing the commission of crimes, enforce laws, rules and regulations and monitor traffic conditions and parking facilities.
  • Respond to requests for assistance (e.g., lock-outs) and/or reports of incidents jeopardizing public safety, resulting in injuries, misdemeanors or felonies.  Determine appropriate response and interact with other college departments/personnel as well as external public safety forces.
  • Provide police/security presence at special events including directing traffic and escorting and protecting guests.
  • Discover, apprehend, arrest and process criminal violators; secure crime scenes, conduct preliminary and follow up investigations, gather evidence and obtain witness statements.  As necessary, file affidavits, serve warrants and appear in court and testify in criminal proceedings.
  • Perform routine administrative duties related to police work (e.g., maintain logs, records and statistics, complete reports of police activities, dispatch and answer telephones).
  • Review changes in laws and regulations.  Receive on-going training in police and safety methods.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Training and Experience

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current Ohio Basic Peace Officer certificate

Preferred:

  • Prior law enforcement experience
  • Associate degree in law enforcement or a related field

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current criminal, fire, and hazardous material laws and regulations, security and law-enforcement procedures and techniques, interviewing, first-aid techniques and CPR.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions; writing clear and concise reports, keyboarding at 25 NWPM, performing mathematical calculations, operating police equipment.
  • Ability to learn and properly apply police and College policies and procedures, demonstrate physical fitness and agility, perform routine and detailed tasks in an accurate and efficient manner, establish priorities, handle stress effectively, resolve conflict, maintain effective interpersonal working relationships.

Physical Activity Level

  • Heavy – Sit, stand, walk or drive for lengthy periods of time.  Ability to think and move quickly when needed.*

*This position requires a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination to be conducted at the Lake Health Occupational Services Department (paid for by the college). 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Applicants must submit to and pass background check.
  • This position requires working outside exposed to inclement weather conditions; works rotating shifts including weekends, evenings, and holidays; must be willing and available for 24-hour on-call or hold-over duty in emergency situations.
  • Incumbents in this position are classified as peace officers under Ohio law; first aid, CPR and basic police certification must be maintained.
  • A valid Ohio driver’s license and a driving record which qualifies the driver under the College’s insurance program are required.

COMPENSATION:  This is full-time, continuing staff position paying a minimum of $25/hour, in addition to experienced officers earning an extra $1/hour per every 3 years experience, not to exceed $30/hour. College benefits include healthcare and prescription drug coverage, dental and vision insurance, life and long-term disability insurance.  Paid time away includes vacation, personal, sick and holiday pay.
