Job Description:  Lakeland’s Learning Center provides quality peer tutoring to students on campus.  The role of a peer tutor is to provide additional assistance to students with their coursework.  Tutors are not a substitute to attending class and they are not responsible for teaching course material or completing assignments.  Rather, tutors are available to help clarify course content and to help students develop effective ways to learn the material.  It is strictly against the Learning Center’s policy for tutors to assist students with any graded material (take home exams, homework, lab reports, projects, etc.).  Tutoring peers is a rewarding experience as tutors not only empower their peers, but also strengthen their own conceptual knowledge and academic performance.  Tutors are hired on a semester basis.

Tutors are required to:

  • Conduct individual and/or group tutoring sessions, depending on demand
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of all tutoring sessions
  • Adhere to all learning Center policies and procedures.
  • Participate in periodic tutor training meetings.

Qualifications/Skills Required:

  • Must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 or higher
  • Must have completed and received a final course grade of ‘A’ or ‘B’ in the course you wish to tutor.
  • Must receive a faculty recommendation for each course you wish to tutor.  This recommendation must come from a faculty member in the desired subject area.  If an individual wishes to tutor multiple subjects (for example Biology and Chemistry) a recommendation from both a Biology and Chemistry professor will be required.  This recommendation can be e-mailed to Suzanne Speyer.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills and a genuine desire to assist fellow students.
  • Must be in good academic and judicial standing.  Students are not permitted to tutor if they are on academic probation or if they have any violations of academic integrity or of the Student Code of Conduct.

Qualifications/Skills Preferred:

  • Responsible, mature, and approachable with the ability to work with a diverse student body while maintaining a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Ability to understand students’ needs and relate well with fellow students.
  • Ability to work with multiple students at the same time and tutor students at different course levels at the same time.
  • Ability to share a workspace with other tutors.

Hours/Days per week:  Flexible days and hours.

Salary:  $11.00/hr.

Department/Location:  Learning Center (A-1044)

Supervisor:  Suzanne Speyer, Ext. 7492

If you are selected for a job, student workers must submit ALL new employee forms and documents to the Human Resources Department (C-2103) BEFORE the first day of employment with the college.

Federal Work Study students hired for on-campus employment also need to complete the Federal Work Study form and bring it to the Financial Aid office - A-1004.
