Lakeland Community College seeks a music director of Lakeland Jazz Impact, a full jazz big band composed of students in grades 8-12 teaching and presenting big band jazz music for three to four ticketed concerts per season at the Wayne L. Rodehorst Performing Arts Center on the Lakeland Campus in Kirtland, Ohio.  Jazz Impact also performs in other venues as determined by the director.  This position will begin with the Fall 2026 semester in August 2026, with possible duties prior to the start of the semester related to recruitment, repertoire selection, and administrative preparation.  Since the late 1960s, Lakeland Jazz Impact has drawn some of the finest young musicians in Northeast Ohio and challenged them to engage with big band jazz music, including solo improvisation and ensemble performance. Members are recruited from area middle- and high-school programs, and the band consistently performs music appropriate to college and university ensembles.  Jazz Impact alumni have gone on to careers in music and music education in Northeast Ohio and beyond. The band rehearses on Wednesday afternoons during the Spring and Fall semesters and gives on-campus performances on Sunday afternoons.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruit, audition, and seat band members to ensure complete instrumentation
  • Select repertoire for three to four on-campus performances during the academic year
  • Lead all Wednesday afternoon rehearsals and conduct all scheduled concerts
  • Coordinate and communicate with other Lakeland staff and faculty, especially the director of the Lakeland Civic Jazz Orchestra, to ensure successful musical performances
  • Communicate to Lakeland faculty and staff needs for facilities, music purchasing, concert programs, and publicity in a timely fashion
  • Oversee the jazz section of the Lakeland music library
  • Perform community outreach and collaboration in keeping with the mission of Lakeland Community College

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Hold a Master’s degree in music education or jazz studies, or possess equivalent experience
  • possess demonstrated ability to organize and lead an advanced high school, collegiate, or adult jazz ensemble
  • possess demonstrated ability to lead and work productively with children ages 13-19
  • pass required background checks for employment by the State of Ohio

COMPENSATION:

  • $4968.94 in a ten-month contract, running September 1, 2026 through June 1, 2027
